Create a simple and fun patchwork pattern by using interfacing.

Collect your fabrics and using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut a variety of 1.5″ squares. Note that this technique works for any size square.

Snip into the seam, at each intersection. Clip as close to the seam as possible.
Press the seams open in opposite direction.
Press the first vertical seam.
Sew each of the vertical seams with 1/4″ seam allowance.
Iron both the front and back.
How your back will look.
You have now completed making your perfect patchwork. Depending on how you want to use it you can topstitich the seams or prepare for quilting. Continue below for how to make a heart coaster.
Trace the heart pattern, using a heart erasable pen, on the right side of the patchwork fabric.
Place the patchwork swatch (right side up) on top of your quilt batting. Pin.
Sew through the 2 layers (patchwork and batting) to topstitch on either side of both the vertical and horizontal seams, starting and stopping approximately 1/2″ beyond the heart outline.
When finished topstitching all seams your piece will look like this.
Cut out the heart following the traced pattern.
Place your quilted heart face down on your backing material.
Pin together, marking a 2″ section you will leave unsewn for turning. I
Sew together with a 1/4″ seam allowance. Be sure to not stitch the marked opening. Backstitch at the beginning and end.
Turn right side out. Using a point turner (a chopstick works too!) to get a smooth shape and sharp point.
Turck in the raw edge of the opeing and press.
Stitch together with the ladder stitch.
Topstitch with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
